Christy Filgate

Coordinator for Special Education
I recently completed my Master’s degree in the area of Educational Research to improve my understanding of how trauma impacts the brain and subsequently, one's ability to learn in the classroom. I am excited to provide a session at the 2018/2019 Teacher's Convention to discuss the effects of trauma and how the effects on the brain can appear as particular diagnosis including ADHD. I hope to provide a sense of understanding of some of the behaviors teachers may see in their classrooms and provide some helpful strategies on how to help these students cope with these behaviors. My Current Position:Currently, I coordinate educational needs for students requiring course and/or exam accommodations. I work directly with students, parents, teachers, exam departments, many Alberta schools, and additional professionals to obtain necessary information and documentation to create Individual Program Plans (IPP) for students. Every student has the potential to be successful when necessary modifications and accommodations are made. Collaboration and relationships between students, parents and teachers are the keys to success!
