The ubiquity of cell phones in classrooms presents enormous challenges to teachers. Despite having access to nearly all of human knowledge students are often more interested in texting a friend who is sitting a 20 feet away. However, modern cell phones can offer an amazing picture of the scientific world thanks to the slow motion cameras built into most of them. These not only allow an amazing qualitative picture of phenomenon that would otherwise be inaccessible but also provide striking quantitative tools. Using high speed video capture students can analyze the motion of everyday objects with striking precision. In this session Ian will show you some of the tools available and provide an overview of how to quickly and easily use them with your students. If you have access to a laptop and a cellphone you are encouraged to bring them to get some hands on practice!
