Layers of Reading in Secondary English Language Arts Classroom

In a time when literacy demands on students are increasing, do you notice that your students are less willing to engage in reading? Do they seem to lack the necessary stamina to tackle complex texts? How do you build a reading program that honours the nature of our students, our program of study, and principles of sound assessment? We will share activities that have allowed our students to connect more deeply with all text forms, including a novel read aloud, student choice reading, literature circles, stories, articles, poetry, film, and visuals. Although our examples are from LA 9, all strategies presented can be easily adapted for other grade levels.

Danica is a classroom teacher of LA 9 and high school English, as well as a former lead teacher in content literacy and assessment. Danica is an avid reading of young adult literature in addition to a well-established mentor in areas of literacy and English.
