Grave Matters: Engaging with the Corpses of Social Studies

Sign up or log in to save this to your schedule and see who's attending!

Feedback form is now closed.
High school social studies curriculum is filled with dead bodies as a result of disease, (un)civil conflict, genocides, wars, and other violence incidents. Yet, how often do we think about how we talk about these corpses? This presentation will draw from the theories of Judith Butler, Michel Foucault, and Achille Mbembe to inspire how we might encounter death in our classrooms. We will examine three types of corpses: banal, idealized, and censored bodies. Banal bodies are those which have become commonplace and ordinary, while idealized bodies are those we make sacred and sacrosanct. Censored bodies are those which are either hidden or removed from attention. We will explore those bodies with direct reference to the Alberta Program of Studies for Social Studies in Grades 10-12.
