Exploring Big Ideas in Math Through Story (K-3)

Sign up or log in to save this to your schedule and see who's attending!

Why Story? This is Math, right? Isn’t it just about numbers? For the novice learner, Math is like learning another language, learning new names, labels, concepts, equivalencies, and relationships. What better way to learn those ideas than by bringing them alive within stories? Stories present a rich medium through which children can explore the Big Ideas of Math. They are particularly powerful when linked to a continuum of learning that reflects the way in which children develop mathematical concepts. This session will explore how primary educators can select stories and associated activities that engage children at just the right level, allowing them to consolidate mathematical concepts already learned and move forward to look at new situations with a base of deeper, more connected understandings. It will present ideas on how stories can engage children in a wide range of mathematical ideas, thinking and activity, in a variety of real-world and imaginary contexts. Note: The presentation will reference the math learning progression behind the development of Pearson Canada’s Mathology Little Books. In this session, we will: • Participate in shared reading as pedagogy • Develop criteria for a good math story • Recognize the math in stories • Discuss Using math stories in the classroom At the end of the session, Participants will receive sample kits of the Mathology Little Books.
