Where is the off button? Why are some students always daydreaming? Unable to follow the steps in a fire drill after multiple attempts? Appear to overreact to the simplest request? Do these behaviours indicate a diagnosable disorder or is there a simpler explanation? When the body's stress response won't turn off, this can cause brain malfunction, negative classroom behaviours and directly impacts a child's capacity to learn. This session will focus on how an overactive stress response affects certain brain structures, how the ability to learn is impacted, and how some of these behaviours can resemble other diagnoses. Through a qualitative research review, we will look at data on chronically traumatized children to better understand how learning is compromised when under chronic stress.
