Developing Math Thinkers, Not Calculators

Sign up or log in to save this to your schedule and see who's attending!

Feedback form is now closed.
As mathematics teachers, our goal is that students become mathematical thinkers. To promote mathematical proficiency, teachers can use math tasks to simulate rich thinking. The type of task we select and how we implement the task can impact how students think and the quality of learning that occurs. In this session, we will try some tasks in order to analyze the level of cognitive demand. Using criteria from cognitively demanding tasks, as a group we will generate instructional moves for effective implementation. Teachers will take tasks to try with students, ideas about where to find tasks, how to choose tasks and strategies to foster learning.
