For the past three years my colleagues and I have developed an refined a practical final exam for our Chemistry 20 course. Originally designed as a way to encourage ownership for skill development in increasingly large classes, we have seen huge increases in engagement during lab activities as students strive to master techniques. Reuben teaches Chemistry, Biology, and General Science at Spruce Grove Composite High. He is a dynamic and iterative teacher who is always looking for ways to improve his practice. His preschool-age children indulge his various nerdy pastimes and make excellent test subjects.
