Making Cultures Visible
As the demographics of our schools and community continue to diversify we need to equip our classrooms and schools with the tools for newcomers to succeed. In this session, you will learn about the importance of supporting culture and language cohesively in ESL programming, and how culture can directly impact second language acquisition. I will also talk about the projects that St. Theresa Catholic middle school created within Elk Island Catholic Schools to reinforce this topic; a Cultural Centre and a Community Support Night both directed at supporting second language acquisition and newcomers to Canada. I believe sharing our journey would be beneficial to all schools sharing the same struggle!

Coding: The Next Frontier
Have you ever wanted to try coding with your students but don’t know where to start? Jessie will share with you how she has used coding in her second language classroom but also how you can use the same ideas in other subject areas. Coding is becoming more and more popular with students and teachers alike. It encourages the use of the competencies such as problem solving, creative thinking, communication, critical thinking, creativity and innovation as well as collaboration. Participants will walk away with ideas of how to incorporate coding into their lessons. Participants are encouraged to bring a computer or Apple device with them.
